Tetris Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

Each time a major awards ceremony nears, you'll find a demand for introducing additional classifications to honor underappreciated efforts and satisfy the spirits of followers with niche passions.

Another commentator has already made for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. So would strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing above others. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that cinema institutions don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil in the world of video games, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications successfully include a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles of one title, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Which classification works among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition in any category during that awards season
  • A different innovative game missed out that year
  • A beloved organization game got ignored recently
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent modest productions, however the design of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games stand as most engaged experiences worldwide maintaining this status for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and engaging across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. One could readily select five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home in important events. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, producing among essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
