A minimum of 11 of the meteorological balloons, transporting 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes, have now been retrieved

Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for hours when numerous of them entered the country's airspace.

Air Travel Interruptions

The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations impacting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.

National Security Measures

Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the main terminal.

As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the Belarusian boundary.

Illegal Goods Seizure

A minimum of 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.

International Illegal Trade

While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."

To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.

Neighboring Country Impact

Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.

Illegal Transport Methods

Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a approach that remains especially affected by weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."

Law Enforcement Objectives

Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that these practices become economically unsustainable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."

International Concerns

Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.

Recent incidents in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
