The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.
Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank
The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Changes
In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”
Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job
The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.
Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions
The Fed typically studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, such as the count of employment gains added to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in early September, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.
The figure of positions created to the market in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown
Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its publication when the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had earlier attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.
Price Data Shows Moderate Rise
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that costs are rising, although gradually. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
